Abstract
Chafee's first run for United States Senate was in 1976 against Richard Lorber, an auto dealer who had never held a public office. Chafee won easily with 58% of the vote and became Rhode Island's first Republican Senator in 30 years. This is a speech given during this senatorial campaign.

Recording approx. 10 minutes. The original tape has been copied onto a surrogate cassette tape and digitized into high-quality mp3 format. This duplicate cassette copy contains all the material recorded on the original which may include extraneous content such as advertisements, public service announcements, background noise, and background voices that were inadvertently recorded when the tape machine was left on. The mp3 files were edited as best as possible so that only the subject matter was retained.
