Born in Mymensingh, which used to be East Bengal, and is now part of Bangladesh.
Part of the British Army (Indian Army) during World War II, Chakraborty went to Italy serving as a doctor. He was a psychiatrist with the Indian Army, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He took an early retirement to pursue private practice and became renowned as a psychiatrist.
