Abstract
The interaction between a gas bubble from an underwater explosion (UNDEX) event and a nearby fluid filled, double hull structure has been experimentally investigated. Two flat, compliant aluminum plates were used as the anterior and posterior specimens in the fixture. These experiments were conducted at a set standoff parameter, which is a function of the maximum bubble radius and the standoff distance, and featured two configurations of fixture to explore the effects fluid volume on the dynamic system response and coupling of the anterior and posterior specimens. High-speed photography was used for the capture of the full field UNDEX event from two perspectives as well as for three-dimensional digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. Results show that the fixture stiffness and configuration have an influence on the bubble dynamics, migratory and jetting behavior, and the damage to the nearby specimens.
