Description

New England's cultural and stylistic influence on American fashion is explored through the eyes of Kirby Nuñez, a designer and New England native. What Kirby seeks to convey in his designs is tightly intertwined with the “New England Look,” akin to what the general public considers “preppy, " which has deep roots in Ivy League culture and has significantly shaped the identity of American fashion. Through the use of historical references, such as trench coats lined with flannel and the hoodie's origin in Rochester, this presentation explained how specific materials, including wool, tweed, and down-filled jackets, contribute to the unique “New England Look." It also discussed how contemporary designers, such as Ralph Lauren and Tyler, The Creator, have adopted and reinterpreted this Ivy style with new materials and colors. The New England style represents the idea of Americana and continues to influence modern fashion in both traditional and innovative ways.
