Abstract
This dissertation presents findings relative to educational creativity in the time of accountability by examining changes in the delivery of English Language Arts instruction in the 7th and 8th grade classes of three high achieving Massachusetts public middle schools. "High achievement" was measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System from its initiation in 1998 to the present. Data were collected through archival research and interviews with teachers and administrators. Discussion occurs regarding curricular adjustment and environmental change in creating a balance between curricula and climate within the middle school milieu. In this time of educational success merging with demands for accountability, a study of this nature presents the opportunity to view qualitative options in addressing quantitative instruction. Additionally, this dissertation suggests the option for further studies.
