Abstract

Ever wonder how the grades you assign impact student learning? Research has shown that traditional grading scales often negatively impact student learning by encouraging students to value the grade over the learning process and by disadvantaging students who come to the classroom with less knowledge of or experience with course content. This workshop explores the practice of ungrading, an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of strategies and practices including specifications grading, contract grading, and mastery-based grading. The facilitator and participants unpack these strategies and practices, outlining how library and LIS educators can engage with ungrading on a spectrum that ranges from redesigning a single assignment to reenvisioning an entire course. By considering new pathways forward in grading and supporting student success, we consider how we, as library and LIS educators, can forge into the future.
