Abstract
This entry explores theories of communication competence from psychological, social, and critical perspectives respectively. Although each perspective shows incompatible differences on their orientation to studying communication competence, it is necessary to examine the common themes that cut across these differences, because to reach communication competence is an important educational objective. These common themes, based on the criteria of effectiveness and appropriateness and served as valid empirical indicators, dictate that communication competence should be comprised of three dimensions of cognitive, affective, and behavioral abilities.
