Abstract
The understanding of Chinese communication is approached from three aspects. First, paradigmatic assumptions reveal that Chinese culture orients to a holistic view of the universe with harmony as its cardinal value, which is sustained by interconnected relationships and an intuitive thinking pattern. Second, harmony, guanxi, mianzi, and authority form the wheel of Chinese communication, and the intertwining of the four concepts of the wheel is regulated by the ethical principles of self-restraint, reciprocity, and respect. Third, the dynamic aspect of Chinese communication can only be observed when the ethical principles are violated, which leads to the jeopardy of harmony, especially reflected in three behavioral deviations, including xian li hou bing, revenge, and strategy.
