Abstract

Tests are suggested to verify the hypothesis that thermal n−p capture proceeds via the transition 1S03S1 and that approximately 10% of the observed capture cross section is due to interaction effects. It is shown that measurements of the "γ polarization effect" using polarized neutrons and protons are capable of testing the predictions of the hypothesis to within 1%.
